The Team

We are very fortunate to have a dedicated team of people who are committed to providing you with the highest level of care possible.

Our office staff are always keen to help you with the consultation and booking process. Jenny and the team will advise you of everything you need to bring with you on the day of your consultation.

Our clinical nursing team observe the highest level of health standards and sterility along with being genuinely caring and comforting during any procedure performed in our clinic.

Dr Hyam operates at Calvary John James Hospital, Calvary Hospital and Canberra Private Hospital. At all of these facilities experienced staff are on hand to ensure that you have a positive and safe hospital visit.

Our Team

A/Prof Dylan Hyam – Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon

A/Prof Hyam is an experienced Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, who gained honours degrees in both Medicine and Dentistry from the University of Sydney. He began his career serving in the Royal Australian Army before taking up his first residency post at Westmead Hospital, Sydney. A/Prof Hyam trained in Sydney, Canberra and the United Kingdom, in order to maximize his exposure to the management of complex maxillofacial patients. In the United Kingdom he gained valuable training and experience in the management of head and neck cancer, orthognathic surgery, and complex bone grafting procedures.

A/Prof Hyam is the Director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Unit at The Canberra Hospital. He divides his time between both public and private practice. A/Prof Hyam holds multiple appointments within the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, relating to the provision of training to young surgeons. His appointment as Adjunct Associate Professor at the Charles Sturt Dental School allows for a continuum of education for undergraduate dental students.

A/Prof Hyam holds all of the required accreditations, recognitions, and licenses to practice as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. He has a broad scope of practice which includes all of the areas covered by this website. His personal interests include spending time with his family, reading, unreliable classic cars, and the arts.

Dr Robert Witherspoon – Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon

Dr Witherspoon studied Medicine at the University of Newcastle, and Dentistry at the University of Queensland, he was awarded with honours in both degrees. He decided to become an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon when he was working as a a junior doctor. During his specialist training he was exposed to all aspects of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He trained in a number of hospitals, which included; the John Hunter Hospital Newcastle, Prince of Wales Hospital Randwick, Canberra Hospital, Westmead Hospital, and the Austin Hospital Melbourne. Dr Witherspoon was awarded his Fellowship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2012.

Dr Witherspoon has served in the Australian Army, as a Regimental Medical Officer, in the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps with operational service in East Timor, Bougainville and Iraq. He is currently a Standby Reservist.

Dr Witherspoon is a Consultant Surgeon in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Unit at The Canberra Hospital, and divides his time between both public and private practice. He is actively involved in the training of junior surgeons and also holds several appointments with the Royal Australian College of Dental Surgeons.

Dr Witherspoon holds all of the required accreditations, recognitions, and licenses to practice as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. He has a broad scope of practice which includes all of the areas covered by this website. His personal interest includes spending time with his family and friends, and also participating in outdoors activities.

Dr Joseph Ryan – Oral Medicine Dentist

Dr Joseph Ryan has a Masters degree in dental pain and its management, and is currently completing his Clinical Doctorate in Oral Medicine at the University of Melbourne. Joe’s professional interests include mucosal disease, lesions of the oral cavity and oral pain.

Dr Ryan graduated from Sydney University with a Bachelor of Medical Science Degree in 2009 and Dentistry from Charles Sturt University in 2014. Joseph also completed a two years research honors that he graduated with First Class Honors in, in 2016.

Dr Ryan is a Canberra local and a keen snowboarder.

Dr Ryan visits our Canberra clinic every second Monday.

Dr Samuel Kim – Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon

Dr Samuel Kim is an Australian trained specialist Maxillofacial surgeon with both medical and dental degrees from New South Wales and Queensland. He also has a Masters in Medicine degree in medical research.

Dr Kim holds multiple hospital appointments including Prince of Wales Public Hospital, Sydney Children’s Hospital, The Canberra Private Hospital and John Hunter Hospital.

Dr Kim specialises in all aspects of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders and is one of the few Maxillofacial surgeons in Australia to regularly perform TMJ surgeries, from arthroscopes to joint replacements. After obtaining his specialist qualification, Dr Kim has spent a further 12 months studying TMJ surgery completing a fellowship at the St. Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne. He is currently the only medically and dentally trained maxillofacial surgeon in NSW with a fellowship in TMJ surgery.

Dr Jacqueline Dobes – Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon

Dr Dobes obtained her medical degree from the Australian National University, and developed an interest in oral and maxillofacial surgery during her time as a junior doctor. She pursued this career, and returned to university to complete her dental degree at the University of Sydney.

Dr Dobes obtained her Master of Philosophy in Surgery through research at the ANU, and received her surgical specialty training in Canberra, Newcastle and Sydney. During her training, she served as the trainee representative in the ACT/NSW regional surgical committee, as well the committee for Continuing Professional Development.

Dr Dobes is a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at The Canberra Hospital, and divides her time between public and private practice. She enjoys teaching medical and dental students as well as junior doctors.
Dr Dobes holds all of the accreditations, recognitions and licenses to practice as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. Aside from her surgical specialty, she devotes her time to her active young family.
